When This Advice Doesn't Apply
There are cases where fast sourcing is the wrong answer. If you need a UV-1800 with a special optical configuration, a refurbished unit is risky. If your HPLC LC-2010 must be validated for GMP environments, buying used might save money but create compliance headaches. Custom setups typically can't be rushed without errors.
For those situations, my honest recommendation is to plan for a longer lead time—or to rent equipment as a bridge. Renting a UV-Vis from an instrumentation rental company can keep your assay running while your own unit is on order. It's not ideal, but sometimes it's the most professional option.
Look, emergencies happen. The difference between a painful one and a manageable one comes down to who you contact first. Keep an updated list of authorized distributors and their phone numbers. Ask for the complete price. And if you're a small team, don't let anyone make you feel small.
